These are the second largest bird of prey found in Australia and are also found in New Guinea, Indonesia, China, south-east Asia and India. They live in coastal environments but will go some way inland if conditions are suitable. They are fairly common here and can often be seen on Farnborough beach, where the photo was taken, or along Sandy Point Road. Their diet is mainly aquatic animals such as fish, turtles and sea snakes but they also eat birds and mammals.
